Residents bring traffic concern to council By Ruth SimerlyAt its regular monthly meeting June 26, the Emmett City Council reviewed a letter signed by 37 residents living in the neighborhood bordering the Gem Island Sports Complex. The letter addressed the dangers around the intersection of North Commercial Avenue and Barton Street from vehicles traveling too fast coming from and going to the complex. The letter stated that children living in the area ride skateboards, scooters and in-line skates and like to jump the corners and land out in the streets. Residents believe it is only a matter of time before someone is killed or seriously injured. The letter requests that stop signs be placed on the east and west corners of North Commercial Avenue and Barton Street. Chief of Police Blaine Hyde said it is possible that if stop signs were placed on those corners, the traffic flow would change. Many drivers would avoid that intersection, and that would not solve the problem. Other possible solutions included placing caution signs in the area, speed bumps and one-way traffic.
