EHS' Bork earns state golf medal

By Joe Sova

Senior Josh Bork earned a medal, leading Emmett to an eighth-place finish in Class 4A at the Idaho High School State Golf Championships at the University of Idaho Golf Course in Moscow on May 14 and 15.

With a team score of 305 on the second day, Pocatello won the state championship by 20 strokes over runner-up Century. Pokey had a 621 total and Century 641. Middleton was third at 648, followed by Moscow (652), Rigby (674), Skyview (678), Sandpoint (682), Emmett (687), Blackfoot (689) and Wood River (694).

Chris Williams of Moscow knew the UI course well, carding a 66 the second day for a 137 total to take boys’ medalist honors. Dillon Laan of Middleton was second at 148.

It was no surprise that Bishop Kelly ran away with the 4A girls’ state title. The Knights, unbeaten all season, finished at 645. Jerome was second — 115 strokes behind at 759. Katie Skinner of BK was the medalist with a 155 total, one stroke better than teammate Maddie Sheils.

Bork came in with a 77 on the first day, but dropped off to an 84 on day two. EHS coach Gus Crank said Bork “ran into trouble on the back 9” the second day, scoring a double bogey midway through the back side.

That left Bork with a 161, which tied him for ninth place to earn a medal.

“Three of his four 9s were in the mid- to high-30s,” Crank said.

Senior James Taylor carded a 173 total (85-88). Sophomore Robert Holmes shot 175 (90-85), junior Jordan Taylor had 178 (90-88) and freshman Zerin Beattie came in with 183 (91-92).

“The greens were extremely difficult,” Crank said. “They were hard and fast. That’s what gave the kids the most trouble. It’s a difficult golf course. It has narrow fairways.”

Crank was pleased with the Huskies’ overall season.

“It was higher than they normally shot during the year, but they had a good season,” the coach said.

It was Jordan Taylor’s third trip to the state tournament and he and Holmes and Beattie gained good experience to take into next season.
