Huskie second-half defense was key to victory over Kuna
The Emmett Junior High School seventh-grade football team capped off a perfect season with a district championship after their 20-13 win over Kuna on a cold and rainy night at Kuna High School.
Emmett’s Porter Gustin ran for two touchdowns, including a tie-breaking 5-yard touchdown run up the middle with six minutes left in the game.
The Kuna boys scored a touchdown on their first drive of the game to take an early 6-0 lead. They scored again on a kickoff return to open the second half, but that was all the Huskie defense would allow as they took over the game and shut down the Kuna offense. “It was great tackling,” Emmett coach Donnie Wunder said of the Huskie defense. “We shut them down when we had to.”
The Huskies took a 7-6 lead on Lane Sandel’s 65-yard touchdown run. Gustin gave the Huskies a 13-6 halftime advantage after a 15-yard rush into the end zone.
Gustin’s second touchdown came after a 35-yard drive and sealed the Huskie championship. “It was a great effort by those kids,” Emmett Head Coach, Steve Beitia said.
